A floor can look perfect on a showroom display and still be the wrong specification for your home. When deciding how to choose LVT thickness, the key is to look beyond one number on a sample label. The overall thickness matters, but so do the wear layer, the construction of the plank or tile, the condition of your subfloor and the demands of the room.
For a busy Kent family home, a kitchen extension with underfloor heating and a quiet upstairs bedroom may all call for different choices. The right LVT should feel good underfoot, sit neatly beneath doors and adjoining floors, and keep its appearance through everyday life. What does LVT thickness actually mean?
Luxury vinyl tile is made up of several layers. These commonly include a backing, a core or body, a printed decorative layer and a clear protective wear layer. The advertised thickness is the combined depth of the whole product, usually measured in millimetres.
A thicker LVT plank or tile can offer a more substantial feel, greater tolerance of slight irregularities in the subfloor and, depending on its construction, extra acoustic comfort. However, thickness alone does not tell you how resistant the surface will be to scuffs, dents and wear. A 5mm floor with a light-duty wear layer is not automatically more durable than a 2.5mm product with a stronger commercial-grade surface.
This is why comparing like with like is essential. First identify whether you are considering gluedown LVT, rigid-core click LVT or a loose-lay system, then compare the relevant specification within that category.
Overall thickness and wear layer are different things
The wear layer is the transparent top coating that protects the printed design beneath it. It is normally measured in microns, rather than millimetres, and it deserves at least as much attention as total thickness.
For lighter-use domestic spaces, a 0.3mm wear layer may be suitable. For hallways, kitchens, living areas and homes with children or pets, many customers prefer 0.55mm for added reassurance. Commercial settings or particularly demanding domestic areas may need a product rated for heavier traffic. The precise choice depends on the manufacturer, finish and intended use, but the principle is simple: choose surface protection for the traffic, not just the deepest board.

How to choose LVT thickness by room

These are often the hardest-working parts of a home. Outdoor grit, dropped pans, chair movement, pets and regular footfall all place demands on LVT. A durable wear layer and a high-quality finish should be the priority, with the overall thickness selected to suit the fitting method and floor build-up.
Gluedown LVT is often between around 2mm and 3mm thick. It is a particularly effective choice where a low profile is helpful, such as a renovation with existing kitchen units, internal doors or neighbouring floors already in place. When fitted over a properly prepared subfloor, it creates a stable, refined finish that works beautifully in detailed layouts, including herringbone, borders and feature strips.
Rigid-core click LVT is typically thicker, often around 4mm to 6.5mm or more depending on the collection. It can be a practical option where installation speed or a floating floor construction is preferred. Its built-in rigidity can make it more forgiving of minor subfloor variation, but it is not a substitute for proper preparation.
Bedrooms and quieter rooms
In bedrooms, comfort and appearance may matter more than heavy-duty protection. A thicker click floor can bring a little more softness and sound reduction underfoot, particularly when paired with the manufacturer-approved underlay. Yet a slimmer gluedown product can be equally attractive and durable in a low-traffic room.
Think about floor levels here. If LVT meets carpet at a doorway, the finished heights should be planned together so that the transition looks intentional and does not create a lip underfoot.
Bathrooms, utility rooms and cloakrooms
LVT is a popular choice for rooms where spills and splashes are part of daily life. Water resistance, joint design and correct installation are more relevant than simply choosing the thickest available plank. Gluedown LVT is often specified in these areas because it is fully bonded to the prepared subfloor, although the right solution will depend on the product and room conditions.
A utility room may have more concentrated wear than a bathroom, especially near external doors or where appliances are moved. In that case, choose a stronger wear layer and make sure the floor is protected from grit and prolonged standing water.
Match the thickness to the subfloor
Most LVT problems begin beneath the surface. Vinyl flooring follows the contours of the subfloor remarkably closely, so small bumps, dips, joins and imperfections can become visible over time. The floor may be thick, but it cannot disguise a poor foundation indefinitely.
A gluedown installation normally requires a very smooth, level and dry subfloor. This may involve removing existing coverings, applying a smoothing compound or carrying out moisture testing before installation. That preparation is not an optional extra - it protects the finished appearance and helps the adhesive perform as intended.
Click LVT may cope better with slight imperfections, but the manufacturer will still set strict limits for flatness. Uneven areas can put stress on the locking joints, cause movement or create a hollow feel when walked on. If there is doubt, a professional survey will establish what preparation is needed before you commit to a particular thickness.
Subfloor moisture also needs careful attention, especially in ground-floor properties, new builds and extensions. Choosing a thicker product does not resolve a moisture issue. The correct moisture-management system and compatible installation method must be specified first.
Consider doors, thresholds and adjoining floors
A few millimetres can have a noticeable effect during a renovation. Thicker click LVT plus underlay may require internal doors to be trimmed or thresholds to be adjusted. It can also affect how the new floor meets engineered wood, tiles or carpet in neighbouring rooms.
Lower-profile gluedown LVT can be the more elegant answer where floor heights are fixed. Conversely, if you are replacing laminate and need to bridge a small level difference, a thicker click construction may make practical sense. Neither option is inherently better - the best choice is the one that works with the whole floor plan.
It is worth thinking about fitted furniture too. Kitchen cabinets, islands and heavy built-in units need to be considered before a floating floor is installed. A floating click system needs room to expand and contract, whereas a gluedown floor follows different installation principles. This is one reason why a room-by-room plan is more reliable than ordering a single specification for an entire property.
LVT thickness and underfloor heating
LVT is compatible with many water-based underfloor heating systems, provided the product and installation method are approved by the manufacturer. What matters is not simply whether the LVT is thin or thick, but its stated thermal resistance, the maximum permitted surface temperature and the preparation of the screed or subfloor.
A thinner gluedown LVT floor can transfer heat efficiently because there is less material between the heating system and the room. Rigid-core LVT can also be suitable, but any integrated backing or additional underlay must be factored into the overall thermal resistance. Never add an underlay because it feels like a sensible precaution unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
The heating should be commissioned correctly and brought up to temperature gradually. Expansion gaps, adhesive choice and temperature limits all matter. With underfloor heating, following the full specification is far more valuable than selecting a thickness in isolation.
Do not overlook sound and feel underfoot
Many homeowners associate a thicker floor with a quieter, more comfortable result. There is some truth in this, particularly with rigid-core products that include an acoustic backing, but performance varies considerably between collections. The construction, backing, underlay and subfloor all affect sound transfer.
For flats, converted properties or upstairs rooms, ask for the acoustic rating rather than relying on a plank's depth. If impact sound reduction is a priority, the whole system should be assessed, including any building or lease requirements. A floor that feels pleasantly cushioned in a showroom may perform differently over timber floorboards at home.
Choose quality before extra millimetres
If your budget requires a decision, it is usually wiser to prioritise a reputable product, an appropriate wear layer and professional subfloor preparation over unnecessary thickness. A well-installed 2.5mm gluedown LVT from a quality range can outperform a thicker but poorly specified alternative for many years.
That said, a thicker rigid-core LVT can be an excellent choice where its construction solves a genuine practical issue, such as a renovation-friendly floating installation, minor subfloor variation or a need for enhanced acoustic comfort. The decision is about suitability, not a race for the largest number.
