How to Prepare Subfloor Properly for New Flooring

A beautiful new floor can only perform as well as the surface beneath it. When an LVT plank moves at a joint, a carpet develops ripples, or a vinyl finish shows every dip in the floor, the issue often began before installation. Knowing how to prepare subfloor properly helps protect the look, feel and lifespan of your chosen flooring - particularly in busy family homes, hallways, kitchens and open-plan spaces.

Subfloor preparation is not simply a matter of sweeping the room and laying a new covering. It is a measured process of checking stability, moisture, flatness and cleanliness, then choosing the right remedial work for the floor above. The correct approach depends on whether you have concrete, timber boards, plywood or an existing floor finish, as well as the product being fitted.

Why subfloor preparation matters

The subfloor is the structural or supporting layer underneath the visible floor. It may be a concrete slab in a newer property, suspended timber in an older home, or a mix of surfaces after an extension or renovation. It does not need to look attractive, but it does need to be sound, dry and suitably flat.

Premium flooring is often less forgiving than homeowners expect. Amtico and Invictus LVT, for example, create a refined, close-fitting finish that can highlight imperfections underneath. A small ridge, screw head or grout line may eventually show through the surface. Carpet can disguise minor texture more effectively, but it still needs a secure base to avoid premature wear and an uneven feel underfoot.

Good preparation also reduces the risk of adhesive failure, lifting edges, squeaks and movement. It is an investment in the installation itself, not an optional extra added at the end of a quotation.

How to prepare a subfloor properly

Start by assessing the room before selecting a preparation method. Remove furniture where possible and consider the complete floor area, rather than focusing only on the most visible section. Doorways, thresholds, fitted units and transitions to adjoining rooms all affect the finished height and detail.

Inspect the surface and identify the subfloor

First establish what is already beneath your feet. Concrete should be checked for cracks, loose areas, old adhesive, paint, damp marks and signs of contamination. Timber floors should be checked for loose boards, damaged sections, excessive gaps, protruding fixings and movement when walked on.

Do not assume an existing floor covering has created a suitable base. Old tiles, vinyl, laminate, carpet adhesive and bitumen residues can all influence the preparation required. In some cases they can be safely prepared and covered; in others, removal is the more reliable route. The decision depends on their condition, compatibility with the proposed adhesive and the total floor build-up.

Make the subfloor stable before making it smooth

A levelling compound will not fix a moving floor. On timber, secure loose boards or sheets, replace damaged areas and countersink any raised nails or screws. If the floor squeaks, investigate the cause rather than expecting the new covering to hide it.

Concrete cracks should also be assessed carefully. Hairline cracks may be repairable, but wider or active cracking can point to movement that needs further attention. A floor that is crumbling, powdery or weak at the surface may require mechanical preparation or a suitable stabilising treatment before it can receive smoothing materials or adhesive.

This stage is particularly important in period properties across Kent, where suspended timber floors can have years of alteration beneath them. A professional assessment can reveal issues that are not obvious until old flooring has been lifted.

Check for moisture, not just visible damp

Moisture is one of the most common reasons for flooring problems on concrete subfloors. A slab can look dry and still contain enough residual moisture to compromise adhesive or cause a finished floor to lift. This is especially relevant in new-build homes, extensions, conservatories and ground-floor rooms.

The appropriate moisture test and acceptable readings depend on the flooring system being installed. If results are above the product specification, a surface damp-proof membrane may be needed before further preparation. It is never wise to rely on a brief period of warm weather or an open window as proof that a concrete floor is ready.

Timber has a different moisture consideration. It needs adequate ventilation below where applicable, and any source of damp, leaks or rot must be resolved before covering it. Trapping an existing moisture issue below a new floor will not solve it.

Create a flat, even surface

Flatness is not quite the same as level. A room can slope slightly from one side to the other and still be suitable for flooring, provided the surface is flat enough for the product and installation method. What causes trouble are local hollows, high spots, ridges and abrupt changes in height.

Use a long straightedge across several directions to identify uneven areas. High points may need to be mechanically reduced, while shallow dips can often be filled with a compatible smoothing compound. For larger areas, installers may use a smoothing or levelling compound across the whole floor to create the controlled finish needed for LVT, sheet vinyl or other close-fitting materials.

The compound must be appropriate for the subfloor, fully cured and installed to the manufacturer’s guidance. Applying it too thinly, too thickly or over an unsuitable surface can lead to cracking and debonding. This is one reason professional preparation is often worthwhile: the material choice matters as much as the application.

Clean thoroughly and prepare for adhesion

Once repairs and levelling work are complete, the floor needs to be clean, dry and free from dust. Vacuuming is more effective than brushing alone, as fine debris can interfere with primers and adhesives. Grease, wax, polish, paint and old adhesive residues may require specialist removal rather than simply being covered over.

Where specified, a primer is applied to control suction, improve the bond of smoothing compounds or help the adhesive perform consistently. Skipping this stage can create avoidable problems, particularly on porous concrete or timber-based subfloors.

Match the preparation to the flooring you choose

There is no universal subfloor specification. The right preparation is shaped by the finish, the room and the way the flooring will be installed.

For glue-down LVT, meticulous flatness is essential. The surface texture and tight joints make LVT more likely to reveal subfloor imperfections, known as telegraphing. This is why the preparation behind a high-quality Amtico or Invictus installation deserves as much attention as the design selection itself.

Carpet is more tolerant of minor surface variation, but the subfloor should still be dry, secure and clear of sharp debris. Underlay can improve comfort and insulation, yet it is not a remedy for damaged boards, loose screed or significant hollows. A well-prepared base helps the carpet sit correctly and wear evenly.

Engineered wood and laminate commonly use an underlay or floating installation method. Even so, they need a flat, stable surface and the correct moisture protection where required. Excessive unevenness can stress click joints and create movement underfoot. Solid wood has its own acclimatisation and moisture requirements, so it should always be planned as a complete system rather than treated as a simple covering.

Sheet vinyl also demands careful preparation because it closely follows the profile below. Tile grout lines, old embossed patterns and small defects can become visible through the finished material unless they are properly smoothed first.

When professional subfloor preparation is the sensible choice

Minor cleaning and straightforward removal work may be manageable for a confident homeowner, but some situations need specialist equipment, products and judgement. These include suspected damp, extensive levelling, cracked screed, unstable timber, old black adhesive residues, floor height restrictions and large open-plan areas where accuracy is critical.

Professional installers also consider the order of work. Kitchen units, skirting, doors, fireplaces and thresholds can all affect how a floor is prepared and finished. Getting this sequence right prevents the frustration of discovering that a new floor has made a door bind or created an awkward step between rooms.
